eSIM: how digital SIMs work on UK networks

The SIM is becoming software. Here is how eSIM activation generally works across UK networks, and the security habits that matter.

What an eSIM is

An eSIM is a SIM profile downloaded into your handset instead of a plastic card. Most flagship phones from recent years support it, and every major UK network now offers it in some form. Benefits: instant delivery, no card to lose, and easy dual-SIM (for example, a UK line plus a local line when travelling).

How activation generally works

  1. Order through official channels only — the network's own app, website or store issues a QR code or in-app activation.
  2. Scan or tap to install the profile onto the handset, following the handset maker's prompts.
  3. Number transfer: bringing a number from another network still uses the ordinary free PAC text — eSIM changes the plastic, not the switching process.

Security: the part that matters

SIM-swap fraudCriminals who convince a network to move your number onto their eSIM can intercept your banking codes. Protect the account that controls your SIM: strong unique password, and never share one-time passcodes with anyone — no legitimate caller ever needs them.
  • Set up any additional account security your network offers (PINs/passphrases for account changes).
  • Sudden loss of all signal while others nearby have service can indicate an unauthorised swap — contact your network's official fraud line immediately.
