The two codes

Step by step

  1. Text the switching service from the SIM you are leaving. The text is free on every UK network.
  2. Read the reply carefully. Within about a minute you receive your code plus, crucially, any early-exit fee or remaining device balance you would owe. The code is valid for 30 days.
  3. Sign up with the new network through official channels and give them the code. The new network handles everything from there.
  4. Transfer completes normally within one working day of the new network processing the code. Brief service gaps of a few hours on the switch day are normal.
  5. Check your final bill. The old network must stop ongoing charges from the switch date, apart from legitimately owed amounts shown in the code text.

Your rights during switching

  • Your current network cannot refuse to issue a code or make you call to "discuss" first.
  • Out-of-contract customers owe no exit fee; in-contract customers owe only what the code text disclosed.
  • If your number fails to transfer or you lose service beyond a day, raise a formal complaint — see complaints and rights.
Never pay for a codePAC and STAC codes are free, issued only by your own network, and no third party — including this service — can obtain one on your behalf. Anyone charging for one is running a scam.
